Systematic teaching and training of field archaeology including exploration and excavation began in Sahitya Sansthan way back in the year 1994. Since then scores of ancient sites ranging from Stone Age to Harappan to Bronze Age, Iron Age and Medieval sites have been explored and documented. Nearly half a dozen sites have also been excavated. Students are trained in field archaeology, which is strength of the department. In fact archaeological field training is an integral part of the course now. Many past students of the department are working as an archaeologists either in Archaeological Survey of in the universities.
